Biology exemplar

Original question

The atrioventricular valve closes when the ventricle contracts. Give one reason.

Annotated answer

StatementThe valve closes. BecauseVentricular pressure rises above atrial pressure, so the valve is pushed shut. NumberOne reason is enough. The rest of the cardiac cycle is not added.

The labels match the frame. Read them in order. This is one accurate route, not the only one.

Exam habit

Repeating the statement is not a reason.

Common pitfall

Writing “the valve closes during systole” and stopping.

In an investigation of mass flow in phloem, students estimated the cross-sectional area of the sieve tubes, rather than the area of the whole phloem tissue. Give a reason why.

Answer discussion

The estimate is of the path the contents flow through. Tissue around that path is not the same area. “Because the method says so” repeats the step and does not justify it.

Where this comes from

Unit 2 sample paper. Question 5 (c) asks for a reason why sieve-tube area was estimated rather than the whole phloem tissue. Sample assessment, not a live paper.
