(reforestationPlanting trees where forest has been cut down., restoring peat-forming wetlands) is an output from the air. Reducing fossil-fuel combustion and stopping peat burning cut an input. Carbon capture at a chimney is an engineered extra output; treat it as an application of the same idea, not a required industrial process.

Biofuels
biofuelFuel made from recently living biomass, such as ethanol from sugar cane. are combustible stores recently fixed by photosynthesis: bioethanol from sugars or celluloseA structural polysaccharide of β-glucose. Straight chains are linked by hydrogen bonds into microfibrils that strengthen plant cell walls., biodiesel from oils, wood chips. In principle the CO₂ released on burning can be refixed by the next crop, so they can be more sustainable than fossil carbon if production emissions are low. They are still combustion in the cycle.
The land, water and fertiliser used to grow the crop are the conservationProtecting and managing species and habitats to maintain biodiversity. problem. Replacing food or habitat with fuel is a human-need versus conservation clash. IPCC’s land report treats large-scale bioenergy as a mitigation option that can raise risks to food, ecosystemA community together with the non-living (abiotic) parts of its environment, interacting. and water if deployed carelessly. You do not need their GtCO2 ranges; you need that tension.
Effective management, not slogans
Specification 5.26 asks you to see reforestation and sustainable resources, including biofuels, as examples of managing the conflict — not as proof that the conflict has vanished. Effective management means more than one land use is considered: fuel, food, timber, carbon and wild speciesA group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.. A palm-oil plantation replacing rainforest may be “renewable” on paper and a conservation failure on the ground.
Who promotes a scheme still matters (5.25). A fuel company, a forest community and a carbon-offset broker can all say “reforestation” and mean different planting densities, species and land rights. Evaluate the method with the cycle and with biodiversity, not with a logo.
NOT: a biofuel is not free of ecological cost just because the carbon dioxide might be refixed.
- A plantation felled and burned each decade is a short loop
- A monoculture can store carbon and still reduce biodiversity
- Restoring peat cuts an input and can rebuild a store
- Effective management considers food, fuel, carbon and wild species together
- Who plants the trees changes the species, the density and the land rights
Two traps this diagram blocks
- Do not call every biofuel carbon-neutral and therefore harmless.
- Do not treat any tree planting as a permanent sink if the wood will be burned soon.

Question
Use the carbon cycle to explain one benefit of reforestation and one limitation of a biofuel crop. [4]
Show a model answer
Reforestation increases photosynthesis into long-lived biomass, so carbon dioxide is removed from the air and stored. A biofuel releases carbon dioxide when it is burned. Even if the next crop refixes that carbon, growing the crop can replace habitat or food and uses land and water.
| Method | Carbon-cycle claim | Conservation tension |
|---|---|---|
| Reforestation | Photosynthesis into biomass; a sink while it grows | Land may be needed for food; monocultures hold little community |
| Protect peat | Keep a long-term store out of the air | Fuel and farming pressure to drain bogs |
| Cut fossil combustion | Stop adding slow-cycle carbon to the air | Energy and jobs still have to come from somewhere |
| Biofuels | Recent photosynthate, potentially cyclic CO₂ | Crop area versus food and habitat |
Make your reasoning visible
Always name the process
“Plant trees” is weaker than “increase photosynthesisThe process in which plants use light energy to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen. into a long-lived carbon store”.
Pair a benefit with a land cost
That is what 5.26 means by conflict of needs.
Key explanations
- biofuelFuel made from recently living biomass, such as ethanol from sugar cane. are recent photosynthetic stores. Burning them returns CO₂, which the next crop may fix again if production emissions are low.
- The method has to be judged with the carbon cycleThe movement of carbon between the atmosphere, organisms, oceans and rocks by photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition and combustion. and with biodiversityThe variety of life in an area, including species richness and genetic diversity., not with the word sustainable alone.
Avoid this misconception
The claim: Biofuels are carbon-neutral, so they have no ecological cost.
The correction: Even if the CO₂ can be refixed, the land, water and habitats used to grow the crop are conservationProtecting and managing species and habitats to maintain biodiversity. costs.

Any two of: reforestation, reduced fossil-fuel combustion, peat protection, restoring wetlands, carbon capture (if explained as removing CO₂).
Practice question

Why is reforestation an example of managing human needs against conservation?
Show suggested answer
It can store carbon and restore habitat, but the land might otherwise grow food or hold a different existing ecosystem; species choice and land rights still conflict.

State one advantage and one conservation cost of biofuels.
Show suggested answer
Advantage: recent photosynthate can replace fossil carbon if grown sustainably. Cost: land, water or habitat used for fuel instead of food or wild communities.

Stretch question
A company offers to offset a flight by planting a fast-growing monoculture on tropical grassland. Using 5.18 and 5.26, write a balanced evaluation.
Show a hint
Sink, timescale, biodiversity, additionality.
Explore the reasoning
Photosynthesis would store carbon while the trees grow, so atmospheric CO₂ could fall relative to not planting. Limits: grassland already stores carbon and holds a community; a monoculture is a weak habitat; the store is lost if the trees are burned; the flight’s CO₂ is emitted now while growth is slow. The scheme manages a conflict only if land, species and permanence are honest.

Why this matters
IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Land assesses reforestation and bioenergy as mitigation with real potential and with risks to food, ecosystems and water when scaled carelessly. That is the professional version of 5.26. Do not treat their tonne ranges as a mark scheme. Land is finite. A plantation that displaces a food crop or a diverse natural habitat may have a very different outcome from restoring a degraded forest. The carbon account must include those changes.

Why might an IPCC land chapter disagree with an airline offset advert while both mention trees?

Why this matters
The IPCC assesses bioenergy and tree planting alongside land use, food production, water and the carbon already stored in soil and vegetation. An advert may count carbon taken up by young trees while omitting what was cleared to plant them or whether the trees will survive. This does not mean all reforestation is ineffective. It means the outcome depends on location, previous land use, timescale and management. A responsible claim distinguishes emission reduction from carbon removal and includes the full system boundary. The biological mechanism of photosynthesis is necessary, but it is not an entire climate policy.

Why could planting an energy crop on a high-carbon natural habitat increase net emissions despite photosynthesis?
Explore a possible response
Clearing the original habitat can release stored carbon, while cultivation and transport add emissions. These may outweigh the crop’s uptake or displaced fuel.
