University courses
University courses
Search degrees, check A-level, IB Diploma or AP subjects, or follow a pathway from school subjects to a career. None of these tools is an offer of a place.
Explore a pathway
Move between school subjects, a degree and possible work. A link is not an offer and not proof that a degree is enough for a regulated job.
Choose a branch, then a course.

GCSE and IGCSE preparation
- English and mathematics
Often expected at GCSE or IGCSE. Grade thresholds differ, and International GCSEs are not automatically the same as GCSEs.
- Sciences
Mathematics and often a science at GCSE or IGCSE are commonly requested for engineering and computing. Grades vary. International qualifications are not automatically accepted as the UK version.
A-level subjects
- Mathematics
Mathematics and chemistry are the usual pair. Physics is often accepted or recommended.
- Chemistry
Mathematics and chemistry are the usual pair. Physics is often accepted or recommended.
University courses
- Chemical engineering
Mathematics and chemistry are the usual pair. Physics is often accepted or recommended.
- Chemistry
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
- Civil engineering
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
- Electrical and electronic engineering
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
Possible careers
- Chemical engineer
Direct qualifying route. The standard degree route.
- Renewable energy engineer
Alternative route. Process and energy modules can lead towards energy roles.
- Nuclear engineer
Alternative route. A possible background. Nuclear roles also recruit from mechanical, physics and specialist nuclear courses.
- Chemist
Related, but not enough on its own. This is not a chemist qualification. Laboratory chemistry jobs usually expect a chemistry degree.
This is a possible educational route, not an offer of a place and not a prediction of a job. Direct, common, alternative and postgraduate routes are not the same thing.
