University courses
University courses
Search degrees, check A-level, IB Diploma or AP subjects, or follow a pathway from school subjects to a career. None of these tools is an offer of a place.
Explore a pathway
Move between school subjects, a degree and possible work. A link is not an offer and not proof that a degree is enough for a regulated job.
Choose a branch, then a course.

GCSE and IGCSE preparation
- English and mathematics
Often expected at GCSE or IGCSE. Grade thresholds differ, and International GCSEs are not automatically the same as GCSEs.
- Sciences
English language and mathematics at GCSE or IGCSE are commonly expected. Required grades differ by university. International GCSEs are not automatically treated as GCSEs.
A-level subjects
- Mathematics
Mathematics plus Physics, Chemistry or Biology is a common engineering pattern. Physics is often preferred.
- Physics
Mathematics plus Physics, Chemistry or Biology is a common engineering pattern. Physics is often preferred.

- Biology
Mathematics plus Physics, Chemistry or Biology is a common engineering pattern. Physics is often preferred.
University courses
- Biomedical Engineering
Mathematics plus Physics, Chemistry or Biology is a common engineering pattern. Physics is often preferred.
- Biomedical science
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
- Biochemistry
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
- Genetics
An alternative or related degree, not automatically an equivalent qualification.
Possible careers
- Clinical scientist
Alternative route. Clinical science is a further training route. The undergraduate degree is only a start.
- Mechanical engineer
Alternative route. Some device roles sit closer to mechanical or electronic engineering.
- Biomedical scientist
Related, but not enough on its own. HCPC biomedical scientist registration normally follows an accredited biomedical science degree, not biomedical engineering.
This is a possible educational route, not an offer of a place and not a prediction of a job. Direct, common, alternative and postgraduate routes are not the same thing.
