Overview

Physician associates work with doctors to assess patients and carry out an agreed range of clinical tasks. In the UK this has often been a postgraduate course after a bioscience degree, although some universities have offered an integrated undergraduate master's. It is not a medical degree and it does not lead to registration as a doctor. Regulation and titles have been changing, so a student must read the current official rules rather than an old course advert. Students who consider it want a clinical role without the full length of medical school, and they need to understand the limits of the role.

You are comparing a physician associate route with medicine and want the difference stated clearly.

Medicine qualifies you as a doctor. This course does not.

People who want supervised clinical work and already understand it is not a medical licence.

Entry requirements

Indicative patterns from published UK admissions information. Not an offer. Actual requirements vary by course, university and year. Pearson Edexcel International A Level and Cambridge International A Level are not treated as the same qualification as GCE A level.

Indicative requirements by qualification

The A-level band is the catalogue reference. IB and American lines come from the named university guides under the table. They are not a conversion every university uses, and they are not an offer.

Indicative requirements for A Levels, the IB Diploma and the American curriculum
QualificationIndicative requirements
A LevelsNo typical A-level band is stored. Postgraduate entry usually follows a bioscience degree. Undergraduate integrated courses publish their own A-level rules. Nothing general is stored as required.
IB DiplomaNo IB example is shown, because no typical A-level band is stored to compare.
American curriculumNo American example is shown, because no typical A-level band is stored to compare.

A-level subjects

Postgraduate entry usually follows a bioscience degree. Undergraduate integrated courses publish their own A-level rules. Nothing general is stored as required.

Often recommended: Biology, Chemistry.

GCSE and IGCSE

Depends on whether the course is undergraduate or postgraduate.

No A-level band is stored because many routes are postgraduate and the undergraduate pattern is not stable enough to summarise.

Other ways in

  • Do not treat this as medicine.
  • Check whether the qualification is currently accepted for the role you want. Rules can change.

Admissions tests and extra requirements

No admissions test is stored as usual for this course. A university can still set one for a particular year.

Course costs

For many standard full-time courses in England, the home-fee maximum in 2026 to 2027 is Up to £9,790. This is the maximum standard full-time fee published for approved English providers with a TEF award and an access and participation plan. It is not the fee a named university charges, and it does not decide whether you pay home or international fees.

Clinical, laboratory and studio courses are not given a different home-fee figure here, because the regulated maximum is not the same thing as an international or clinical fee.

International tuition is set by each university and is not stored here. Clinical courses are often much higher than classroom-based courses. A school in Qatar does not decide home-fee status.
