3.23B: Structure of the urinary system

Urinary-system structure: kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, with their distinct roles.

LEARNING GOALS

By the end of this lesson

  • Identify urinary-system structures.
  • Trace urine from kidney to outside.
  • Distinguish blood vessels from urine pathways.

BIG QUESTION

How does urine travel from blood-cleaning organs to controlled release outside the body?

The urinary system separates production, transport, storage and release.

Kidneys make urine from blood

Two lie toward the back of the abdomen. Renal arteries supply blood; renal veins return blood after filtration and regulation.

Urine drains from the kidney pelvis, not through the renal vein.

Ureters carry urine to the bladder

Each is a muscular tube connecting one kidney to the bladder. Waves of smooth-muscle contraction move urine even when body position changes.

A ureter is not the same as the urethra.

The bladder stores and the urethra releases

The muscular stores urine, allowing discontinuous release. Sphincters regulate its outlet.

The carries urine from bladder to outside the body.

Urinary-system structures

Each part performs one stage of the route.

Production to release
StructureConnectionFunction
KidneyRenal vessels and ureter.Filters/regulates blood and forms urine.
UreterKidney to bladder.Transports urine.
BladderBetween ureters and urethra.Stores urine.
UrethraBladder to exterior.Releases urine.
Renal artery/veinCirculation to/from kidney.Carry blood, not urine.
KEY TERMS

Language that earns precision

ureter
Tube carrying urine from a kidney to the bladder.
bladder
Muscular organ that stores urine.
urethra
Tube carrying urine from bladder to outside.
renal
Relating to the kidney.

Common misconceptions

Claim: The urethra joins each kidney to the bladder.

Correction: Ureters do; the urethra leaves the bladder.

Claim: The renal vein carries urine.

Correction: It carries blood away from the kidney.

Claim: Urine is stored in kidneys.

Correction: It is formed by kidneys and stored in the bladder.

EXAM LANGUAGE

Match the answer to the command word

Label

Check ureter and urethra spelling and endpoints.

Trace

Kidney → ureter → bladder → urethra.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Recall, apply, then justify

01Describe4 marks

Describe the route and role of urine through the urinary system.

Hint

One structure per stage.

Suggested marking points
  • Kidneys form urine.
  • Ureters carry it to the bladder.
  • The bladder stores it.
  • The urethra carries it outside the body.
02Explain2 marks

Explain why ureters contain smooth muscle.

Hint

Movement should not depend only on gravity.

Suggested marking points
  • Coordinated contractions/peristalsis propel urine.
  • This moves urine toward the bladder regardless of posture.
STRETCH AND CHALLENGE

Explain why blockage of one ureter can damage a kidney even though filtration occurs from blood.

Planning hint

Consider pressure downstream.

What a strong design includes
  • Urine cannot drain normally from the affected kidney.
  • Fluid accumulates in the ureter/kidney pelvis.
  • Back pressure rises in kidney tissue.
  • The pressure can oppose filtration and compress nephrons.
  • Prolonged obstruction can reduce function and damage tissue.
